T-Stat?

Okay, so I'm replacing the thermostat in my 1976 F-150..(the previous owner had taking it out). So there wasn't one to go by, and I'm unsure if I put it in correctly. And I've looked on many forums, the only problem is I'm a very visual person. I guess the only thing I need to know is.. does the spring go towards or away from the engine bay? Any pictures or comments that may be useful?

Thank you.. Big Dom (The Hulk)

First off...I'd spend the extra coin to get a Robertshaw tstat^^^.

Secondly...You drop in a tstat, exactly as the one in the summit pic is positioned:

Also be sure to be careful on the waterneck. First time I ever did one, I ended up cracking the cast neck.

Most thermostats are marked; for example some say "TO RAD" to identify which side faces the upper radiator hose.

Just a little FYI and trick I read about and do now, drill a small hole in the flat part of the T-stat to let air escape as you fill the coolant, so you don't end up with a big air bubble trapped in there behind it.

jsutton,

I had a 84 Ford Bronco ll that I repalced the water pump on ,it air locked on me, after several failed attempts I called an old mechanic who told me to install a flush tee fitting on the heater hose and fill the system that way, never had any other issues with it.

I just run the truck with the radiator cap off for a while. Have not had a prob. I use Motorcraft thermos. You can find them, just look around. Cost me $6 or so.
