Has Anyone herd of the brand name Omega. Its a pipe bender, but it says it can bend high pressure/temperature tubing as well. Is that the same as DOM tubing. I'm pretty new to the whole roll cage and bumper fabrication. I know I need to use DOM for strength, but I don't know what kind of bender to use. Thanks Jesse
FWIW - if you're "new" to this, get a few serious projects under your belt before you tackle a cage (and possibly a bumper). Don't know what kind of wheeling you do - but either of those built improperly can be worse than none at all.
You can use a pipe bender to bend tubing with mandrel quality if you weld end caps on the tube and fill it with sand. I have used this method for the last year, it makes very smooth bends with no apparent loss of strength. I have yet to rollover test a roll cage, but from the pieces I have made and tried to destroy, they seem to hold up ok.
I know that nothing is as unsafe, as the illusion of safety. I'm going to start with building small stuff like a spare tire carrier for the bed of the truck, and a stinger for my ****** Jeep. I'm good at fabricating, I just need some direction. Thanks Jesse.
I've bent HREW tube with a pipe bender, and it came out ok, but it was slow. I tried bending DOM and it kinked it like nobody's business. If you want to get serious about building anything with tube, get a bender like the JD2. Check their website for info. Its expensive, but well worth the money. Other makers of the same style are ProTools which may be a little cheaper. Check Trick-tools for prices.
Better yet - find someone else that owns a bender and buy them a beer or three. One of those tools that is expensivem takes a lot of space and gets used for the first big project and then sits....
Follow someone in your area with a serious Jeep home!
Unless you're building prerunner bumpers out of tubing, how much tube are you going to put into a pickup?
FWIW, have a full cage in the Jeep - and even if I were starting a new one from scratch, wouldn't be able to justify the bender, die sets, etc as a good investment.
