I know this has been asked a million times before but I need to figure this out. I got my donor truck yesterday, a week later than expected but got to tinker with it a bit today. I'm not sure if it is the original to the truck and I got three different opinions on what kind of engine it is. I was told it was a 390 (of course), a 400, and a 460. The engine is stock Ford, with a 2 barrel carb. It also has factory air and the truck is a 78 F150. What can I look for to tell what it is or at least get close?
Most likely a 400M as it has a 2bbl carb. I belive all the 460s had 4bbls but I aint 100% on that. Last year of the 390 is 76 so it aint an FE unless it was installed.
If it is a 4WD they did not offer the 460 in 4WDs in the 70s.
If it is original it is most likely a 400 though the 351M is externaly identical.
There can be a possibility of three V8 engines if it is stock. Post the VIN.
302
351M400
460
The 302 is small and compact with a bolt on front aluminum cover for the timing chain. It uses the small bell pattern shared with the 300 six.
The 351M400 is a bit larger and has a integral area for the timing chain, The heads have rectangular indents on the top of the exhaust ports and will have the i block bell housing.
the 460 is much larger and has a seven bolt valve cover. I shares the bell housing with the 351M400.
No way its a 302, way too big for that. I can pick those out easily with my Mustang experience...
What does the I block bell housing look like? I'm not sure how to differentiate it. I'll look at the heads tomorrow and see what it tells. From a glance, it looks identical to the 460 that is in my other 78 but I havent put them side by side to check however my 460 has alot of mods (edelbrock high rise alum intake, holley 750, etc) but if 460s didnt come with a 2bbl then it cant be that because it has the original intake and carb.

The I block bell housing would look like the one in your 78. It has a 460 in it right? maybe taking a look would be your easiest bet.
The 460 will be rounded above the exhaust ports on the heads. The 351M400/460 bell has a top bolt spacing of 7 5/8 inches where as the 302/300 bell is about 5 inches.
It's amazing what a little closer look will do. I'm not sure what those two guys that said 390 and 460 were smoking...SINCE THE FACTORY STICKER IS STILL ON THE VALVE COVER! When I was looking at the engine, both times i was on the passenger side. Today I ran by the house at lunch to check for the things you guys mentioned and saw this:
So yeah, that about sums it up.
Here's the VIN too, if anyone wants to decode (hint hint ND).
