mornin guys...have any of you experienced a shutter in your trannys when they shift??? i have a 2003 mountaineer, i find it almost a shutter feeling when it shifts on occasion... also if i was to drop into 2nd gear manually i find this also... all gears are there but its not a positive shift... what do you think???
Very randomly I've felt a shudder and associated jolt in my 2004 Mountaineer V8. I'm not sure if it is at the time that it should shift. It seems to only do this when I'm going very slow (each time I was driving through a park) and I think each time it was as I was coasting. I was definitely traveling well under 35 mph each time so it wouldn't be something related to the torque converter locking I wouldn't expect. I should also note that each time I had the vehicle loaded with 2 adults, 2 kids, and a weekend's worth of camping gear. One time I had all that plus a 5300 lb camper attached to the hitch. Prior to towing the camper I had the tranny fluid and filter changed (56k miles on the vehicle, not sure of the history before 46k) and the fluid did not show any evidence of abnormal wear.
The "jolt" that I mentioned felt almost like if the vehicle were lightly rear-ended by a bicycle. No marks on the bumper so I don't think that was the case each time (only 3 separate times that I remember).
I had a similar problem with my '97 Ford Explorer, and it wound up being the Transfer Case "Hall Sensor". Initially all signs seemed to point to a transmission problem, but I got on the forum and found many issues with the Transfer Case. When I went to the dealership, they wanted $1200+ to replace it. I then returned to the forum, and a Ford certified mechanic recommended replacing the Hall Sensor only as it was $100-$200 total including installation. The dealership had me sign a waiver in case it didn't solve the problem, I gladly signed, and was even glader when it fixed the problem. Six years later - NO PROBLEMS. BTW - if you don't have 4WD, then this recommendation is Not Applicable. Good Luck.
My 04' Explorer has a shutter/sliping like feeling,,,but only when the steering wheel is turned..hence turning a corner on take offs,,,is like a sensor is kicking it into Auto 4x4 (front wheels turning at different speeds) trying to lock into 4x4,,,wish they just left the switch alone,,like on my 97 Expedition,,,,2wd, Auto4x4, 4x4Hi, 4x4Low that worked fine!
I had a similar sounding problem with my 06 EB V6. No codes in the ecm and the problem was intermittant. Not sure where I found the information (maybe this forum) but a few people suggested the throttle position sensor TPS. Picked one up at NAPA for around $50 and the problem is gone along with an increase in mpg.
Precisely!!! That's the EXACT problem I was having! If you turn the steering wheel to the far left (or right) you get this shudder problem which leads you to believe it's the tranny. The Ford tech on this site (there's probably a thread from 5 years ago), pointed me to it, I see now the technical name is "Hall Effect Sensor" and is in fact related to the transfer case as previously mentioned:
I had them replaced on my truck and saved the cost of replacing the entire transfer case ($1200+) that the Ford dealership had quoted me. I know it only cost me $100-$200.
How you describe the problem is precisely what I experienced with my '97 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD. Hope this helps!

It's very common to have transmission problems with Explorers from 2002 to 2010. Oh yeah, your's is a Mountaineer, but ya know, same thing basically. But I had a 2004 Explorer XLT with the 4.0L SOHC V6. Sometimes I would notice a very loud thump from the transmission at about 70 mph. It happened about every week or so. It started to worry me. The transmission also lost overdrive at about 75K miles. I'm not trying to scare you, just trying to help you. I finally realized I made a HUGE mistake with an Explorer. I'm now driving in the 100% better 2010 F-150.
