e40d lost second gear!!!

my friends truck lost second gear completely!! i think it is just a shift valve in the main valve body, but i could be wrong, it went from having strong perfectly working second gear to none at all, if i remember right, the brake band tightens up to make second gear???? or does it loosen up to make second? i dont remember! could it be a shift solonoid not working? stuck open-closed? i am going to pull the valve body and have worked on these transmissions before, im pretty good with them, i know what valve is for the 2-3 shift and the 3-4 shift, but i cant remember where the 1-2 shift valve is! if someone could post a pic maybe of the valve body for me that would be great! thanks

manual second creates first gear also, and drive skips 2nd goes straight to 3rd

To make second gear the intermediate clutch applies and the intermediate one way clutch holds. With the shifter in 2 (manual second gear) the intermediate brake band also applies, or tightens. The band is not used in automatic second.

The intermediate clutch is not applying or the one way clutch is not holding. The clutch could be a stuck shift valve. If it is the one way clutch it can only be a failed one way clutch.
