woah one question at a time yes you!

Hi names joe I'm from el paso, tx 22 years young. Well I purchased a 1981 f100 from some guy and well when I drive it shifts perfectly fine the 4 speed OD tranny doesn't slip or anything but it does make a clicking noise that seems to get louder and fast as I accelerate but only in 1st and 2nd gear not in 3rd or the OD. I just recently got the tranny fluid changed thinking that was the problem but it didn't work sadly. Anyone have any ideas?
Expecting the worse I've been looking for a new AOD tranny to put in the truck and I found some guy selling one for $375 but its a 4x4 so I don't know if it will fit in my truck so any possible advice if it would or wouldn't work?

If your truck is 2wd, then a 4wd trans will not work.

As for the clicking sound, check the u-joints.

Would the u-joints be the cause of it only being heard in firsdt and second gear? Thank you for your reply!

Again, no. Won't bolt up to the motor.

Have you checked the u-joints? They are prone to clicking/squeaking at low speed, that seems to go away by about 30-40 MPH. At only $10-15 each, they're a cheap fix.

I agree with the u-joints. The other possiblity is the speedometer cable. Does the speedo jump around at low speeds then smooth out above 40...lube the cable with white lithium grease in a can.

I would say the tranny is fine.

Speedo cable. U joints. flat spot on a tire. not likely the transmission.

memories come flooding back. We used to put stainless steel zip ties around a buddies driveshaft on his dodge cause he could never figure out what was making the noise. I don't know how he never noticed it.

Took it to a mechanic and he said it was coming from the front of the tyranny so I'm waiting for the results.

Personnally if your not 100% sure what the issue is I would just drive it till you have some real problems like dropping a gear or something. Also there are plenty of trans out there in Crown Vics and stuff like that that had a AOD that came from behind a 5.0
