The cab on my 76 is beyond rusted out. I found a cab and.doors.at.the.junk yard for m230 dollars. Am I gonna have to file for a salvage title if I swap cabs?
The chassis VIN is the true VIN anyway, so doing what kentuckycrew said will do. Granted by law you are not supposed to mess with the VIN tags, but as long as things match with the title you have and the chassis VIN you'll be fine. You can also get a replacement door jamb sticker to match as well through Marti Auto and also the special rivets to use for the VIN tag. Marti Auto Works - Concourse Quality, Hobbyist Price
No, you won't. As bucks77Ford said, the LEGAL VIN is the VIN that is stamped on the frame of your truck. The warranty plate on the door has NO legal standing when it comes to title issues, doors are too easily swapped. In fact Ford does not call the metal door plate a VIN plate, thats why Ford refers to it as a warranty plate.
If you were swapping the frame it would be a whole 'nother story. But just a cab swap, no title worries.
You can, as bucks suggested, get a new warranty plate and door cert from Marti. Or if your plate is in good shape you can just get the rivets and transfer the plate.
Mike is absolutely correct. Guy at DMV went right to frame after my rebuild when doors had been replaced. VIN is supposed to be on top of passenger side frame towards the front but someone told me he found his under the cab. Both of my 74's are visible when looking of top of pass fender. You may have to clean the top of rail to see it.
Ooh. Thats not good news for me. In the process of swaping frames on my 77 f150. Some previous owner decided to cut 22" out of frame right behind the cab. The title is still good through FL dmv and i am planing on swaping the driver door also. Have the title in my name now but the chasie # and door # will not be the same. But i will not have to have it inspected to get a tag right?
I'm Florida too. To be legal, the VIN on the title must match the VIN on the frame. Its that simple, there is no "wiggle room".
Is the title currently in your name?, is the registration current?
If it hasn't been registered in the last two years and you have to transfer the title. They may require a visual inspection.
Do you have the title to the frame you're planning on using?
If you do have a title to the frame you are using than the DMV will use that. Then you can order a new door tag and sticker through Marti. If you don't have the title to the frame you are using than it will be a sticky situation. I'm sure there are many trucks out there today with mismatching chassis VIN and cab VIN numbers. I've seen trucks with a F100 2wd registrations on F250 4x4s. Unless things are fishy about a truck, many things are overlooked, but anyone takes a chance using a VIN and title to the cab number and not the chassis number. Before I found my title to my truck, I almost had to consider a build title. I needed a title in hand to a component to my truck whether it be an engine, door, axle, cab etc and would have had to bring it to my DMV to get the truck inspected, pay a fee and then the DMV would create a new VIN and title. Not sure about what FL does.
The title is now in my name didnt get a tag for it yet. Waiting till the build is finished. Has not been registered for quite a while. When I turned the org title in for the name swap it was last reg in 83. So its been a while. The lil town I live in prob will not have to do a vehicle inspection. Bought the Frame from Craigs list n didnt know i might need the title for it. Oh well I will make it work one way or another. Thanks a lot.
