There's a threaded ring with three risers that stick up from it take a flat head screw driver and tap on one of the risers using a plastic hammer it will unscrew and the unit will come out. They do make a wrench for removing it but I never found one. You can get a new seal and lock ring at a parts store or online do replace the seal or it will leak.

I recommend you check out the action of the sending unit real good before instaling it. I just had my '89 E150 rear tank one replaced, $82 for the Fuelpump with sending unit plus labor to remove the tank and install it and now the sending unit don't work right.....1/2 tank of gas reads "E" on the guage......bummer!

I replaced the one on my 89 and it was in backwards so the float was hitting the side of the tank. You can adjust them, disconnect the power to the fuel pumps with the sending unit out of the tank have someone in the van looking at the gauge key in on position and someone moving the float lever. The people who put in in should fix it.
You're right of course, and that's good advice for this OP....... and we did try that on my van and it "seemed" to be sorta ok....but when I took it to the station to fill the tank I put in 5 gallons and took a reading and 5 more etc etc....it just didn't seem to follow too good, and never went to full but when I started the van it did.......so maybe my pulse-sending part is bad, huh?......capacitor bad maybe?........anyone know where that unit is on an '89 E150?
