Just remember that if you bar over the engine,, you run the risk of binding the bolt where a magnet will not pull it out. Good luck.

Can the removal of the back plate and install of new rear main seal be done with the engine still in the truck?

I don't know if his truck is a 4x4 or not, but if it is, would it be easier to pull the engine?

The truck is a 4x4. I am having trouble finding articles or videos on how to remove the transmission. The best I have come across says to remove transfer case first then transmission for easier removal. But I haven't found any detailed instructions on how to properly remove the transmission.

I can't speak for the trans, but I know the engine isn't too bad to pull.

How many miles does your truck have on it?

To pull the engine you need to unbolt the trans from it, So no it's not.
I have always pulled them together but I made my own bracket.

The transmission would be far easier to remove than the engine, you have bell housing bolts, torque converter to flex plate nuts ( if this is an automatic ) cross member bolts, transmission cooling lines, shifting linkage and wiring harness and front and rear drive shafts and transmission dip stick tube. It would be much easier to handle the transmission without the transfer case attached.

Ok. That's what I was thinking. When I finally pull the rear cover, will I be able to clearly see the bolt that dropped?

Will the starter need to be removed to get the rear cover off as well?

Maybe it is just me but all this seems a little intimidating for the first time separating it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but once the rear cover is removed, I should be able to see the bolt or it should drop out. Correct?
