'95 F250 4x4 w/ 7.5. The truck will not move forward but WILL back up. When in forward drive it acts like it is in neutral. He said it happened suddenly and left them stranded. Something easy or something major? I don't know Automatics, that is why I drive manuals. Please help if you have any idea.
I think I would check that the shift linkage is working properly right up to the transmission. If it is then my guess would be that the forward clutch inside the trans is toast.
I think it's toast, but you can do this: Place it in "D" and wait for some minutes, it should engage (mine did, i used it like that for a couple of months before rebuilding the tranny). Whenever the truck is warm already, it should engage easily.
+1 for all the above. Autos build the most pressure in reverse so that is usually the last gear to continue to operate. Keep your fingers crossed for the low fluid
Good point from rla on checking the fluid level.
Reminds me that it is not unknown for the fluid filter to fall into the pan giving those synptoms so may be wise to drop the pan and check for that first.
I would also check the neutral switch for problems. My 94 got caught in a bad storm (drove it through about 2.5 feet of water) and water got into the mlps (Manual Lever Position Switch) switch and I lost all but reverse. Remember its an electronic transmission. Loosing all forward gears with no fluid damage or some kind of other sign leads me to think it may be control circuit problems.
