I have a 1994 250 turbo diesel with 64000 miles. At times when I start up it runs rough and lets out alot of white smoke but clears up upon increasing throttle. Any ideas?

what does the smoke smell like? raw diesel where your eyes water and nose burns? or does it smell like a sweet smell? does it smoke upon first cold start of the day? or everytime you start? will it continue to smoke after the truck is brought to operating temperature?
