Sweet smell as I am sure you know is not good and almost certainly coolant.
Can you monitor engine oil temp (EOT) and engine coolant temp (ECT)? EGR cooler tend to go south from clogged oil coolers. A clogged oil cooler will cause the EOT-ECT>15 when the truck is fully warmed up EOT>190.
What did yours turn out to be? So....I have an 05 F250 CC LWB, just hit 60K and mine just started smoking tonight. I too am losing coolant. The realistic side of me says I am a head gasket victim, but am looking for someone to change my mind. Any insight you could pass my way would be much appreciated. Repair time? Cost? etc.....

if its smoking white its probably your egr cooler
head gaskets usually dont blow smoke just puke and and coolant loss
Do the smell test. Does your white smoke smells like sweet coolant or typical diesel exaust. If coolant then check egr. If diesel then check ficm. Easy to check both.
Thanks All!! I will check both. Last night I was thinking possible injector issue too. SO I added some Diesel Kleen Cetane boost. So this am, the exhaust smelled like a hybrid of Diesel Kleen and a small amount of coolant. I am a long time shade-tree mechanic, but have never done much work on a diesel except for tractors etc. Does anyone have a link to either diagram or pictures of location and identification of the EGR cooler and/or the FICM?? My dilemma is I have to drive to WV today (3 hr drive) to instruct a class for Sun-Mon-Tues. No option to not take the truck. Looking for any insight that will help me get the inspections done quickly prior to my trip. it is 7:50 now, I have to leave around noon. I just changed the oil and filter, no coolant in oil. Started it up and oil pressure immediately went to normal range. smoke still coming. If EGR cooler, how hard is it to delete it? I have read a few posts about that remedying the problem. What options for FICM? Thanks again guys!!!!!!
If you keep running a truck that is losing coolant and smoking, you risk turning an EGR cooler leak into a head gasket leak (if it hasn't already happened).
The EGR valve is right behind the manifold intake elbow and right on top of the engine - easy to pull an check (although it is not that easy to wrestle it out). The EGR cooler is buried deep in the engine - it is a whole day repair, unless your name is cheezit. You can see where it is if you look straight down to the left of the turbo and look for a small blue hose - it will be below the intake manifold.
The FICM is behind the degas bottle - it is a large flat rectangular metal box that is really under the cab and almost touches the firewall. Check youtube - there is a good video that shows FICM testing and removal - this is also a quick test.
Good luck. To check for puking, look for white splash marks around the degas bottle - there should not be any.
Bismic, That's what I don't want to do. I have read post about EGR cooler deletion. I assume that means remove it from the equation, like ctalytic converters before the days of emissions testing here in VA. Is that a short term solution? Where is the cooler located?
