axle removal?
ive got a 1997 f150 5.4 4x4. its got the 3.55 locking diff. and i gotta leaking wheel seal. i think ill go ahead and replace them both. will i have to remove the diff cover to remove the axle? or just the 4 bolts at the ends of the axle? (it has rear drum brakes) thanks you guys!

all ford axles that i have seen work the same way. drain the oil and take the rear cover off (same time). look at the two small planet gears on a 1 inch size small sahft. there is a small bolt that retians the shaft into the housing. take out the screw and push the 1 inch shaft out, but try not to remove the gears. look at the end of the axle shaft inside. you will see a c-clip. shove the axle in toward the center, then pull the c- clip off the shaft. go to the outside wheel area and pull the shaft out. the hard part is getting the screw out of the small shaft holding the two planel gears in place. sometimes they are loctite in and TIGHT.
