i have noticed in the winter they do help keep the rear window clean of snow/road spray. atleast on my explorers they worked well. idk if theres a decent one for the excursion.
Never have seen one on an Excursion, but if they do make them my first concern would be raising the profile of an already tall vehicle. My Excursion barely fits through the garage door opening...and I'm assuming that any rear air deflector would have to stick up at least a couple of inches to get clear of the turbulence caused by the roof rack.
I've had one on my X for about 4 years. Got it from Ford already painted the same color as the X......grey. I believe it was around $250 to $300. Fairly easy to install. Looks good but you may say I'm biased after paying that price.
Now for the argument as to what purpose it serves and I have had this disucssion before on this site. Contrary to popular belief the primary purpose of the air deflector is not to keep water, dust or bugs off the rear window. Believe me, I know. I drive a 1 mile gravel road every day.
The primary purpose is to reduce aerodynamic drag that occurs behind every vehicle. Behind every vehicle there is a negative pressure area with respect to standard atmospheric pressure. The exterior shape of your vehicle will determine the aero drag load. For example, my ZO6 has a significantly lower aero drag coefficient then my X. This negative pressure area produces the same effect as if superman (yeah, I know. Just trying to keep it simple) was standing behind your vehicle holding the bumper while you are trying to go forward. Think of drafting in NASCAR. Same thing. The guy pushing is breaking up that negative pressure area at the rear on the front vehicle. Therefore, two go faster then one. I know it sounds hokie (no offense to VA Tech) but that is the purpose of the air deflector. It reduces areo drag, therefore, improving mileage. No you will not see 2-3 MPG increase but over a long period of time you will get some benefit. I doubt I will get back the money I paid for it.
If you doubt what I have said, just Google "aerodynamic drag" and read to your hearts content.
Sounds like someone may have been 'imbibing" last night
Don't be dissin a dark green ex - our first x was an 02 dark green one !!!
everyone listed it as black when we brought it in for detailing, service, etc...
so most didn't notice it was dark green !
and ditto on the purpose of the air deflector,
freshman flow dynamics class in Kollegg taught me that.... between imbibing pasttimes @ LSU
buddy got one and noticed VERY little improvement of anything - he just lliked the looks!
