Cat delete

I've been pricing exhaust systems and have even considered straight piping at this point but Im concerned the straight pipe might be too loud. While looking at exhaust systems I noticed there's alot more turbo back systems then there are cat back systems. I always thought it odd to have a cat on a diesel. Do they actually make that much of a difference emissions wise on a diesel engine. On the flip side of the coin, does the exhaust flow that much better without it? I'm liking the MBRP 4" cat back set up but should I be looking at a turbo back system.

Turbo backs are alot more popular I guess. I deleted the cat on my 05 within a year of getting it. Don't really know what differance it makes on a diesel. Anyway I have a 4in straight pipe on it now, I wouldn't consider it loud. When you get on it, you hear it. There are also alot of people who like to leave the stock down pipe on and go with a cat delete and 4in the rest of the way. Not sure why.

As someone who had a cat delete, and put the cat back on, I can tell you the only difference was sound. The exhaust tone didn't change much, but the turbo whine is less noticeable. Personally I see no reason to delete the cat on a 6.0.

You can buy a turbo back and still retain your cat.

My big concern with the straight pipe is towing a fiver up a long hill will it get really loud in the cab? If its not that bad as mentioned above I might as well save myself $300+ and just install a muffler delete leaving the cat in place.

Again, I dont think its too much...then again I've been drag racing Mustangs since 18. The muffler deleted will be louder than leaving it on and deleted the cat. Thats for sure...

I just put a 4" MBRP turbo back on a few weeks ago sans cat. I was told by many that I wouldn't notice: however, I had a horrible vibration and you could hardly hear myself think between 1800-2000 rpm. I quickly found that one of the hangers had shifted during tightening and was contacting the frame rail- a quick adjustment and everything was MUCH better. You can tell you don't have the cat, especially at the 1800-2000 range, when you get on it. But if you're light on the right pedal, it's really not that bad. I am getting about 1-1.5 MPG better with the new exhaust(hand calc over about 6K mi).

I looked through my cat and it was not clogged in anyway. I will be having a pipe made to reinstall the cat for inspection purposes, not sure if I will run the cat all the time though. Now that the vibration is taken care of, it's quite manageable. By saying manageable, I spend a good portion of my drive time talking to business customers, so I am comfortable talking to them without having to shout.

Then again, you should expect that it will be louder than stock with 1) am muffler and 2) no cat.

I was also looking at buying a turbo back system for my 04 f350 4x4 dually, but i cheaped out and had my local muffler shop cut the cat and muffler off and weld in a 4" straight pipe, and i personally think it sounds great, the loudness increase in the cab at normal operating range is very minor, it doesnt sound too loud, but when you rag on it, it will certainly talk to you, i pull a 16" enclosed construction trailer with mine up hills and it hasnt gotten annoying, and it only cost me $80

I think you're correct in thinking the stock muffler is a bigger restriction than the cat though.
