The 6.0 psd launch was a disaster and that in itself created such a bad reputation that Ford could never alienate. Add in the AM filters that caused X amount of injector failures, injectors with stiction problems, too many flash revisions to keep track of, poor head bolt design, poor oil cooler design that clogs with misc antifreeze particles and causing EGR cooler failures, EGR valves clogging, Poor quality control of the FICM, a engine design with too many gaskets that allowed too many oportunities for oil leaks, poor cable/wire routing allowing intermittent shorts, and every month in the news Ford and International were jockeying for position in court in which Ford had to buy out the contract early and now Ford is advertising their new 6.7 is designed and built in house as a result of all the sins of the past. Add all these accumalative problems/issues that were all too common and you have a recipe for a negative attitude towards the 6.0 psd.
BTW... I still like my 6.0 psd although I almost pulled the trigger on a new 6.7psd.
Good post!
I have not seen this mentioned in this thread.... the Ford Technicians were not trained properly for the first year or two of the 6.0's life ('03/'04). When trucks were brought in with issues most Techs had very little, if any, knowledge of exactly how to properly and effectively diagnose the issues. I sincerely doubt any of them knew of tuners and the issues those caused!
That lack of Tech training, purely Ford's fault, was an early pox on the 6.0 that never really went away and was aggravated by the issues stated above.
I love my truck, I like the 6.0, but the 'seed of doubt' is always there every time I tow and will remain there until I get another truck. Here's to hoping the 6.7 is a success!
In all my years I have never known a diesel engine to maintain 'clean' oil.
What Mfg. ever thought these owners would know enough to maintain these trucks with the correct oil, filter and maintenance schedule to avoid any potential problems. After all it is a 'work truck' not a Porshe. End result, a lot of these owners that didn't do this pass the problems on to the next guy.
What doesn't help is the engine has to have a meltdown before a Cel will come on. Owners aren't even given a chance to pull there foot off the pedal.
Do any of you think people bash the 6.0L because the ones that complain are the ones that chip it and modify the truck? I heard the truck just has too much power for the head bolts? Especially when its modified its just too much for the truck...
The only mod on my 6.0L is that it is straight piped and honestly it has done nothing but improve the truck in my opinion...
Mine is stock. Bullet proof doesn't exist. I have an updated oil cooler (Ford upgrade), coolant filter and egr delete(welded).
I run an economy tune, more for the speed limiter and tire calibration than the fuel. And I don't save any miles per gallon more than when I run stock. As far as power, my truck will run with the best of them. That would be another point, I don't beat on it like it's a toy. 6.0's are what you want them to be. Mines great. 116000 miles. Yah that's just a drop in the hat for these motors, but if it's a look into the future. I'm Good.
I have a 04 F 350 6.0 diesel, now I prefer Ford Trucks, I always had Ford truck I have a 2001 F450 7.3 and I love That Truck. Now my newest is the 04' PSD FX4 6.0 diesel, nice truck BUT...... I only had it for two years now and she has cost me $$$$$$ in multiple repairs egr valve twice egr cooler the turbo, and the tranny $$$$$ I have A big hole in my pocket since, currently broke down in texas with my family and the high maintainance PSD at the dealer now would not start crossing my fingers for the bill? getting very gunshy with that truck.....but I am Still a FORDMAN lol.
