My 92 explorer pings at cruise, not under load. I've tried many of the tricks including new intake gasket, but now I'm thinking the EGR is not functioning properly. At cruise, it sounds like something "clicks" and the pinging starts. If I go WOT, the pinging stops.
I cannot find the EGR, where is it? Does the car even have one?
The '92 doesn't have an EGR valve. The EGR didn't show up on the explorer 4.0 until '94.
As far as your pinging, in addition to cleaning the MAFS, I've heard some who get the pinging to go away by cleaning the injectors (did you look at them or have them cleaned while you were doing the intake manifold gasket?), decarbonizing the cylinders, a problem with the ECT sensor, some other vacuum leak or air intake leak. In essence, anything that can make the engine run lean can cause it to ping (the lean condition is the cause of the ping).
Good luck
