I have a 92 Ranger with 2.3 with coil packs 5 sp manual . Last NOv. I posted a problem about engine ping at cruise speed . I have replaced egr, evr, egr position sensor, ect, and the ping continued until I decarboned with water injected thru a vaccum port according to a post on this forum . This along with installing cooler plugs ang removing octane spout has done away with pinging though I have a loss of power. I checked fuel pressure which was 22# which according to haynes is low. Now I have codes po172 rich - so I changed my air filter cleared the code and now I have a code po173 -lean . This truck has 155000 and the original cat Thanks in advance for any help
If you pulled the Spout connector, then your engine timing is currently stuck at base timing of 10 degrees BTDC, which would result in a considerable performance hit.
Regarding the lean code, check for air leaks, i.e., loose vacuum hoses, unsecure PCV system, etc. In addition, Your fuel pressure should be around 35-45 psi KOEO and 30-45 psi KOER, so it is ineed low which could very easily account for the lean condition. Consider a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pressure regulator before condemning the pump.
Thanks , Rock for your reply . i have changed the fuel filter and checked the fpr according to the haynes book and it seemed to be o.k. . There was no fuel in the regulator.I notice cel came back on a couple of times for about 30 seconds at acceleration but went away at hy speed (55) . I will check the codes later and keep you posted. Also I'm getting a consitant 26--28 mpg which I think is ok ?? Thanks again
