Truck will not start!!! HELP!!! SOLVED

Hi All,

New to the forum and really need some help.

I have a 97 F150 LT extended cab with a 4.2L engine that will not start when you turn the key. It will start how ever when you bridge the soleniod on the fire wall.
I have replaced the battery, the soleniod on the fire wall, rebuilt the alternator and checked / cleaned the ignition switch on the steering column but still nothing.

Can anyone out there help me figure this out!! What do I check next?

Thanks in advance.

There's a diff. between no start and no crank Grizz, but I get the feeling you already know that. Rebuilt the Alt? Try a spare key if you have one.

So true sorry, when you turn the key to the start position, NOTHING, no crank over at all.

When you put the key in the run position and by pass the solenoid on the firewall, full contact and running perfect.

I will try another key if I can find it.

Well all is well and the old saying still stands, never send a boy to do a man's job.

I had my step-son go through all the fuses and check to see if there were any blown out. Today I decided to double check all fuses again and found there were 2 blown, changed them out, turned the key and away she went.

Welcome to our world!, To my knowledge the 97 didnt have the PATS system, therefore another key would likely result in the same outcome.
Since all is now well,Id suggest however you check which fuses were blown, and look at that circuit.
Once they blow, there typically has to be a reason,as this situation could come back to bite you in the a**......

I found that the solenoid on the fire wall was causing a short and blowing the fuses. I figured this out by taking out the new solenoid and put the old one back in, turned the key and heard the fuse snap.

Most excellent...Now you know. I had a 97 4.2 XL LWB automatic, and she never let me down. Its just always nice to know what caused the original problem, and that you confirmed/corrected the issue.....Stick around here. Youll find that there are alot of folks here that love their Fords, and are adamant about helping others.......

I will for sure be sticking around, found an answer to my haunted wiper's here today as well.

Next step is to change my injectors and re-do all the seal's & gasket's now that the starting issue is resolved.

Ya, I wasn't sure if the 97s had PATS, but I figured it was worth a shot.

My "old" 97 had 161,000 showing, and NEVER leaked a drop. The ONLY reason she was traded was the "Cash For Clunkers" program was about to wind down, and I found the SWEETEST deal on the 07. The 4.2 isnt a powerhouse by any means, but she did WAY more than ever expected to do,and came out unscathed.
I truly miss the ole girl, and since Ive never seen her on the road locally,Hope she is still doin what she did so well........
