Trans Temp

Okay, I know I am going to get a quite a few different responses, but I want them all. The question that I have is how hot does your trans get when...

On Highway:
90 Degrees outside:
80 Degrees outside:
In Traffic:
90 degrees outside:
80 degrees outside:
How big of tires:
What Ratio in the rear:

These questions should be answered with the notion that you are not pulling a load.

Try to compare if my trans is running hot or not.

Thanks
Andy

temps

I run right around 135 at 80 mph on a 90 degree day empty, can see 140 going up a long pass, or 120 going down a long pass. Town really doesn't change much, not that i do much in town in MT.... I do have a secondary tranny cooler, the Derale unit from Clay. I am stock tires, 373 rears.

here's some variables to my numbers: BTS trans with PI converter, 6.0 cooler, Synth tranny fluid, OTW lines in the radiator, all temps posted are at 5600' elevation approx. All temps measured using an aftermarket tranny gauge plumbed into the side port of the trans.

Just a suggestion but you may want to post your truck configuration and what temps you are seeing also. As a rule of thumb, anything 60-100 degrees over ambient temperature is acceptable.

Thanks to those who responded...All the info was exactly what I expected but also what I didn't want to hear. I am running 285 tires and travel 50 miles back and forth to work. On a hot day around 90 I can reach 165 easily but stay there cruising at 70-75 mph. Once in traffic it will quickly rise to 180 if not higher...I am not happy...now this is the third trans in this truck. I have over 193 on the truck, the trans just about 70K...In all honesty, will a flush, new filter and a possible bigger cooler bring my temps down or start saving for a rebuild??? Also if I change the fluid at this point will I affect the trans by changing it to a synthetic or just put a quality fluid in?

Again thanks to everyones response.

Depends on how many miles are on your current fluid and filter. A bigger cooler and Synth oil should help also but quite honestly, those temps are not really that much out of spec.

Why not? Where do you see a problem? This looks normal to me.

Andy, I know where your coming from. Both of my 99's ran 180-190 on a 90* day. The bosses 01 runs 150* loaded....
What I just learned is that the later trucks have oil to water trans cooler in the radiator along with the stand alone oil to air trans cooler.
If you do not have the OTW radiator than your numbers are normal for a 99.

Your 99 has to small of a cooler. I had the same. When I put in the John Woods trans I ran it thur the radiator for cold climate and also put on a 6.0 trans cooler. I now run about 150 at 99 here in riverside. Other wise it is around 135. I have a 99 cc lb 4 x 4 pds. also 4.10 rearend ls. When I pull my toy hauler loaded its about 183 on the gauge going up tall hills. The trans cooler change alone makes a big difference. I have family that have also changed trans, factory, more then once. Heat kills them, but really you aren't that high, now if you tow I am sure it is much higher. Hope this helps, God Bless Chet

Mine runs just slightly below half on the gauge at 100 outside temp.

Yes, all 7.3's Superduty's from the factory had the same small cooler - regardless of the year. I believe the OTW lines for the radiator started appearing around the 2000 or 2001 models.

The factory temp gauge on the dash on the '02-03's are not accurate at all. It will read the same temp on the dash gauge (just slightly below half) when the true temp can be below 100 degrees or over 200. That's why a lot of us went with a aftermarket gauge to be more precise on what the real temp is.
