I recently bought a 2002 7.3 truck. it has 90,000 on it and i love it. I was hoping you guys might shed some light on a long crank time symptom though. During a cold engine start up it will crank normally and fire right up, but if i run it to operating temp it will have an extended crank time to fire up (~6 seconds or so) it is noticeably longer than a "cold start". This seems abnormal to me. What are your thoughts?
Hard to say without hearing it, but our trucks can have varying start times because of the high pressure oil system that it uses. More than likely you are par for the course and are experiencing the same thing we all do.
But 6 seconds..? that is too much.. Just for fun, I would check the level of the oil in your High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) after the engine is up to temp.. should be about 3/4" from the top .. Does it takes 6 seconds if you shut it off and quickly re-start?
