First, the 89 setup you have on your motor. Does the water pump turn clock wise and is it short or long nose, and is the alt a 2g or 3g. Did you get the water pump, alt, p/s pump and a/c comp. off the 89 donor motor. If it is what i need i may just look for an 89 f150 setup for mine cause i really like the way it looks and if it bolts right on then that a definite bonus.

According to the belt diagram on the 79 mustang routing, it goes counter clockwise while everything else goes clockwise. The part stores say it is a standard rotation water pump. I think it is a short nose. The 79 and 89 water pumps look identical, except for the rotation.

The 89 alternator was not a 3g. I am using a 3g on the motor though. It is in place on the engine in the picture.

I got it all from the 89. I am using the alternator bracket from my 79 mustang though. The only reason is that the brackets are almost identical to the 89. I already notched the bracket for the 3g upgrade and am saving the 89 for a spare.

click on that picture of the engine and it will take you in to my flickr page. I have more pictures in there. You can see the grimy brackets on the 89 before I cleaned and painted them.

If the water pump goes counter clockwise, it is reverse rotation. Look at the back of the water pumps, the ports are angled different on standard and reverse rotations. Also, in my experience, the standard rot. pumps usually have a cast iron housing, while the reverse pumps usually have an aluminum housing.

I am going to go with the water pump for the 79 mustang 5.0.
The 79 is an identical outer shell of the 89 and 93 water pumps with reverse rotation. The 79 water pump jackets match the water jackets of my mechanical fuel pump timing cover. The 79 mustang has a factory serpentine belt system almost identical to the 89 F-150. The water pump is standard rotation, with an aluminum case for the 79 mustang 5.0. This is the part number and info from autozone:

I have posted a thread in the general auto information area for help from any 79 mustang owners. This is it https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ce-please.html .

Loud fords, I do not disbelieve anything you have said. You have made valid points and I am trying to do my best to get my engine right. You have actually helped me a lot. I bought a reverse rotation pump awhile ago and had it bolted to my engine. Looking at it closer I now see why I can not run that pump with my timing cover. I really do not want an electric fuel pump since I already have a aftermarket mechanical one.

I have deleted this post. I went to an old friend today that has dealt with mustangs for the past 25 years.

Look at the above thread link in my above post for the solution.
