I am going to put a 351 windsor in my 79 also. I have swapped it to a single serpentine from a 89 f-150. I believe this body ran from 87 to 91 maybe 92. The 351 brackets work perfect on my motor. I will have to upgrade the a/c compressor to the 89 though. It really is not that big of a deal though. I also saw a truck in the junkyard with an a/c delete pulley. This serpentine set up allows me to bypass the pollution pump. The body style after this has to have the pollution pump to tension the pulley.

Here is a previous thread.

First Today, If I find an 89 model f150 I can get everything off the front of the motor and it will fit with a reverse rotation water pump that I that the builder can put on my engine he is building for me? I like to look of yours and will go that route as long as a lot of modifying doesnt have to be done. Thanks

Grab all of the bolts with the brackets. I am running the water pump from a 93 f-350. It is the same outer shell as the 79 mustang with serpentine set up. I had to notch one spot on the alternator bracket for the 3g alternator. It was a very minor modification and is not noticeable. Make sure it is a 351 windsor in the truck. If the thermostat bolt on the bottom is easily accessed it is a 351, if the bottom bolt is hard to access it is a 302.

What are you running for a fuel pump? Supposedly the 1985 Mustang 5.0 is the only timing cover to have BOTH the reverse rotation (serpentine) water pump AND the mechanical fuel pump.

I will have to check my timing covers. I compared the gaskets from my old waterpump to the new one with no issues. My 79 mustang 5.0 has 60,000 original miles. The original owner kept perfect records of all fluid changes and mileage since new. This car had serpentine setup with a mechanical fuel pump. My dads 66 had an 81 T-bird 5.0 with serpentine set up and mechanical fuel pump also. He never had any over heating issues.

I will check this out on my motor again and let you know.

I have done a lot of part number checking on the autozone and oreilly web sites. It looks to me that if you run a mechanical fuel pump with a serpentine set up, you need a standard rotation waterpump. If you run a non mechanical fuel pump timing cover, you need a reverse rotation waterpump.

I checked part numbers for waterpumps for
1979 mustang ghia 5.0
1981 T-bird 5.0
1984 lincoln markvll
1985 lincoln markvll
They all call for standard rotation water pumps.

I searched for the timing covers for the same cars and came up with different part numbers. The differences were for timing lite marks and sensors. They still had the same direction as the older timing covers that use regular rotation water pumps.

I then went to ebay and looked up 1979 mustang 5.0's. They had serpentine just like the one in my dads pasture.

I looked up 1979 mustang belt routing diagram and found this.

This is the same routing for my 351 windsor with the brackets from the 89 ford truck. The 89 ford truck has non mechanical fuel pump and uses a reverse rotation water pump.

To recap, correct me if I am wrong, I am by no means an expert.

mechanical fuel pump timing cover with serpentine belt = standard rotation

Non mechanical fuel pump timing cover with serpentine belt= reverse rotation water pump.

Okay, I just debunked my own theory. I am looking at a 1983 F-150 timing cover with non mechanical fuel pump and it has a standard rotation water pump direction in it. My new thought is that you need a water pump to match the flow direction of the timing cover that you run. That would be the most important thing to me.

I found all the brackets that came off the 83 ford crown vic motor that I had in my truck and the water pump rotates in the clockwise direction, that is if you are standing in front of the motor watching it turn. It rotates the same direction as the crank pully. I can use my 1983 pulleys but its a 2 belt system with the alt,p/s on the drivers side and ran off one belt with the water pump and the other belt runs only the a/c comp and smog canister ( which I will do away with). So if I need to I can use the 2 belt set up I already have I just think the single belt set ups look nicer.

I agree. I think the serpentine looks cleaner. The whole reason for me is to have only one belt to tighten. The downfall though, is that if it breaks, everything is lost.

true on that. I am going Junk yarding tomm and see what I can find. I figured anything from about 88 and older should work. Whatever I decide I better get with it since my motor will be here in about 4 weeks and I got to get the brackets cleaned and painted.
