Why an X?
Why an X?
I hope this hasn't been done before. If so, my apologies in advance.
I was reading the how old are you post and saw some people mentioning that they tow boats, have a ton of kids, etc. Also some that probably don't fit either of those reasons and thought, why an X?
So, why did you decide on the Excursion instead of a pick up, minivan, or other ride?
Just curious.
Thanks

I chose the X because I simply outgrew my Expeditions. I've had 3 Expy's towing a variety of travel trailers and boats and Explorers and F150s prior to the Expy's. When I got my current boat the Expy just wasn't up to the task. I had always wanted an Ex and now had a great reason to get one. That said though - I miss a lot of the features of my last Expy (07) - would be real nice if Ford had continued the development on these beasts. Until that happens - I'll just upgrade the things I want to change and do it for them.
I bought my Ex because I wanted the size of a big SUV and power of a diesel. I have had smaller SUVs and they did the job but as my kids got bigger they got smaller. After GM closed the local dealers and took government bailout money I could not buy a Suburban, I have a buddy who owns a Ford dealership and he helped me to find this truck.
I was looking for a decent tow rig under 10k. Went looking for a Ford SD and really thought everything was overpriced. A friend suggested looking for a EX. I really didn't need a truck because my son has a F-150. Found one I like for a great price. ~8K. It's quickly become our favorite vehicle to drive. Can move the whole family and it's great for those trips to home depot. You can sleep in the back when you go camping and unlike a truck whatever you put in the back stays dry.
SAR Skipper,
There aren't many vehicles out there that can do what an Ex can do.
I've only got 2 children...BUT...we travel ALL OVER the country towing our 9000# travel trailer. We've been thru the Rockies twice and are planning another trip in 2011...
I like the fact that the Ex has 3 rows of seats...I can separate each child in their own row so that really cuts down on the cabin chatter on these long hauls.
Also while towing we have the whole area BEHIND the rear 3rd seat that our child can reach for snacks, and extra stuff. In a pickemup truck you lose the third row and the bed of the truck is huge and the kids may or may not be able to reach the stuff thru the sliding rear window...
So for us...since we primarily use our Ex as a tow vehicle...it allows the family to spread out and for dad to keep his sanity without the kiddo's nagging at each other because "you're on my side, you're touching my stuff, etc..."
It also is an AWESOME tow vehicle with the motor options...I chose the V10 and have been completely satisfied rolling down the road at 17,000#'s combined for 5 years and well over 25,000 TOWING miles.
There will never be another Ex...at least I don't think so.
Joe.

I have 2 now grown kids. Both still remain at home while attending school and my 4 year old grandaughter lives here as well.
It's unlikely that we'll all go anywhere together on an even semi regular basis anymore
I don't have a TT but I will be towing various boats over a period of time. From time to time I'll have a crew with me. Other times, just the grandaughter, wife and maybe my daughter (grandkids mom).
I just wondered if most the owners had a small army of kids, towed massive loads, or just got them because they liked them?
Your answer was great!
Please....more......
I'll take one like that too

My wife said that we needed someting that would carry 5 grandkids with their bikes, our bikes and maybe up to 4 granddogs; 2 old pugs, 1 "cavashon", 1 rotty/sheperd and what ever other dog the kids have rescued. Plus, pull our old Nomad trailer fully loaded for the aforementioned group. If we are going camping in a state park, that means all water and food. We sold my beautiful low mileage 1990 F250 SD double cab with 8' bed because it just could not quite do everything. Plus, it got really horrible mpg's! We were looking at newer trucks to pull the trailer when we found this Ex for 1/2 the price of anything remotely useful to us. We were looking at p'ups, no SUVs. Nothing like it! No regrets!
When I purchased my first Ex, 02 limited V8, I was actually looking to buy an Expy. The Ex was $3,000 less than the Expy so I got the Ex. I liked the Ex so much I traded the 02 in on an 05 EB diesel 4x4.
I don't tow and only have 2 kids so I don't need the space. I just fell in love with it.

Two teen kids, Sometimes two of their friends, Two parents, two cats, two dogs (each over 80lbs) A cooler in the truck, and a 30 foot trailer. 4 wheel drive.
The Excursion does it better than any other vehicle. Period. (yes even the Suburban)

I've always had two seaters or a pickup and it got old taking four vehicles on a family trip or friends going out. So I decided I wanted the biggest affordable suv on the market. My first choice was a Hummer, but the salesmen at the dealership would not let me test drive one. I believe it was because I was driving my beat up Nissan pu and was told that they did not have any keys to a Hummer on the lot. I'm still pissed about that, but I'm so happy that it pointed me to my X.

That again happened when we bought our Jeep Liberty. The sales manager wanted to go home so the salesman said to come back tomorrow. The salesman would have stayed all night but the manager had to go to a BBQ.
So the next day we went to another dealer and drove home a Jeep Liberty. On the way to the dealer the salesman called to ask what time we are coming. So sad. :-)
the reason i wanted an excursion. because when i was 10yrs old and they came out i wanted one...bad i never thought i'd have the chance to own one. but in '09 at the age of 19 i was able to buy my old '04 xlt v10 4x4..i LOVED IT! i do not tow, do not haul. but i loved having the biggest suv made and be able to tow/haul if i ever needed to.
i then sold the '04 thinking i really could downsize and be happy. that did not work so i now own another one. '00 limited v10 4x4 and i plan to keep it! i just cant do without all the interior space and extra seating room.
i also did not want a pickup because i allready have a f-250 for hauling/snow plowing it would be such a waste of space IMO having 2
for me its not a "need" but a "want" i just want an excursion, since i also have a expediton now and my explorers i have all my basis covered
