Just keep in mind that most of these kinds of platforms have about a 200 pound weight limit. It has something to do with the leverage of having the weight so far away from the hitch.
I think the weight rating on these strictly based on the trucks hitch rating. The ones that have the smaller 1-1/4 tube are rated at 200 lbs because that's the max tongue weight for a class I hitch
Most of the ones with a 2" square are rated at 500 lbs, since that's the max tongue weight for a Class III
Most of the ones you buy in the store are cheap over seas ones and we all know how good the quality is there. That is a nice looking platform and should serve you well.
i have changed spark plugs, changed oil and filled her up with gas. no unexpected repairs at all (knock on wood!) it keeps racking up the miles and asking for more! it came with new shocks all around, new brakes all around.
i'm very happy with this truck, plan to add a 3rd row seat and a programmer maybe some 1.5" rear lift spacers. otherwise she will stay pretty much stock and i have no problem with that.
we had to take our '69 cougar xr7 which has been in storage since 1997. did not feel it was in driving condition so we rented a u-haul trailer and i put the expedition to work. i would have used my excursion but its sitting on jackstands waiting for parts to come in
anyhow, she pulled great! you could def tell it was back there but had pretty good power except on the biggest of hills(had to take them in 1st with it too the floor and doing 35mph)
trailer alone 2,200lbs
car weight 3,500
so a combined trailer weight of 5,700lbs and the little 5.4 did wonderful!
she downshifted into first and could only manage to keep 35mph. these motors like to rev, no worries about blowing. there is a rev limiter for a reason and i was nowhere near it.
no, its always there so you dont over rev the motor. just ask mike at 5star, your shift points(highest limit the rpms get to before shifting) are rather low stock. with my SCT3 tuner you can have them raised higher thus getting alittle more power.
your shift points(highest limit the RPMs get to before shifting) are rather low stock.
Ahh, you're talking shift points when in D or O/D. Those are altogether different than the rev limiter.
To see what I'm talking about, with your vehicle in park or neutral raise the RPMs up. At about 3K RPMs the engine will seem to buck and misfire. That's the rev limiter kicking in to prevent damage that can be caused by over reving an engine without a load on it.
Now if you were to manually shift down into L and floor the gas, the engine RPMs will go right up to the redline and quickly lead to a blown engine. This is what I thought you did when you said you went hill climbing while towing in 1st gear, with the gas pedal to the floor. But that's only if you're shifted into L (Low). In D or O/D the tranny will upshift at the programmed RPM in order to protect the engine.
my rev limiter doesnt kick in untill 5500 or so in park/N
like i said, the TRUCK downshifted into 1st and was running as hard as it could, i always run with o/d locked out unless on the highway(loaded or unloaded i hate when it hunts for a gear and we live in a very hilly area) i can tell you pretty much constantly what gear its in and if the TQ converter is locked or unlocked. as i started up the hill i was allready in 2nd then i floored it and it kicked down to 1st, still only able to get 35mph and 3k rpms until the hill subsided alittle.
even if you put it into 1st and floored it it would do the same thing it does when you hit your speed limiter, try to keep from blowing up by limiting the RPMs and or cutting fuel.
well yesterday it was so nice out, the expedition was dirty so i thought it was time for a good cleaning. i try to keep my trucks pretty spotless if possible so it wasnt too much work. put a fresh coat of wax on her, i think she looks pretty fresh!
