DPF delete kit and now check engine light...

I have a 2008 SD. I ordered a dpf delete kit with the pipe and programmer. As I understand it, this programmer does nothing other than prevent the regen cycle. I've gone 5K miles with no problems (and much improved mileage IMA). I bought some diesel from a sketch fuel station, and I started smoking like crazy. The pump said ULSD. The check engine light turns on. All the code said was "particulate filter." I cleared the code, drove to the local parts store, and poured in some diesel cleaner to get rid of any water. The light comes back on within a quarter of a mile. I've burnt that whole tank of fuel, and I'm going to change my fuel filters before I clear the code again.

Does this sound like a case of bad fuel or has my DPF delete caught up to me? If I have to put my DPF back on to take it back to the dealership, I will be sad.

Muchas Garcia

You may want to post this in the 6.4L section in the Diesel forums. Since the subject is specifically 6.4L engines you should get some good help. Though, just a heads up - lots of people look down upon the DPF-delete kits for various reasons.

A friend of mine nearly doubled his fuel economy with a DPF-delete though. I think a lot of it was his foot too, but he went from 10 to 18mpg. Not sure if I want to march down that road just yet...

Nope, you are just in the SuperDuty section. Go down further and you will see Diesel and the 6.4 section.

Well couple things come to mind. Drop them filters immediately before your HPFP is toast.

Be sure to drain as much as you can.

Now what programmer are you using? Sounds like it is not good. Take the truck back to stock, restore everything till the truck get all cleared up if not too late already.

So what programmer did u use?

I agree that it sounds like a tuner issue.

I've read the horror stories about the fuel filters, so I'm already in the habit of changing them every other oil change. I put the Gearbox Z 4.0 kit on (not the one with an economy tune). I still have the cat. The tune keeps the stock sensor in the exhaust pipe, but resets the regen counter to zero every time the truck is cranked. I went from 10/12 city/highway to 15/18. I know I could get 20, but I like the right pedal.

Maybe it's bad fuel. Maybe it's a bad tune. Maybe it's a bad exhaust sensor.

Once I get to work on Monday, I'll give the fuel system a good purge and then clear the code. If it comes back on, I'll go back to stock and visit the dealer. I don't miss the regen cycle. Not even a little bit.

U usually have to go into custom tune and manually turn off regen, at least on an edge, simply tuning it to say stage 3 isnt going to turn regen off

Here's an update. I replaced the fuel filter. It was disgusting. Black nastiness. I just changed it 1000 miles ago. One of the mechanics at the office also changed a secondary filter that's in the engine bay. Had no idea that there was a secondary filter. Also disgusting. Cleared the code and put 400 miles on it with no check engine light.

I just thought it was interesting that bad diesel leads to bad smoke leads to check engine light with a particulate filter code. I guess I'm glad it does. If I still had a particulate filter I might have never known. It might have just regen'd more often.

hm.., you should have seen two filters in the box.. and wondered where the second one might go...

oil every 5000 miles, fuel filters every 10,000 miles,

where did you get fuel in the last 1000 miles? (ie, last 3 tanks)..
don't go there again!.. we want to know, to avoid it too!..
