Variable Geomitry Turbo For 7.3L

Just wondering if anyone has put a VG turbo on a 7.3, and how it was done. Have been thinking about doing this for a while and just wanting to research it before I do. Who sells them ATS?

I'm not sure if anyone actually offers a kit.

A few places experimented with them a couple of years ago on the 7.3L.

why?
the 6.0 guys usually replace the VG with a NON Variable Gate turbo from ATS
The non VGT is a better proven design for high output HP
Ford's VGT is great for stock motors but quickly becomes a limiting factor for high HP performance modifications

Did it work out? Or is it worth it just to get one of the ATS turbos?
The VG turbo just seems to be good for towing and power that is the only reason I want one.

I'm not sure if the 6.0's had any of the same issues, but the '05 Duramax had heat issues because of increased backpressure from the variable vane and a lack of cooling. The pre '04s were non-variable vane turbos and didn't have the same problems. The problem was most noticable when towing heavy loads (overheating). Notice how much bigger the grill, radiator, and intercooler is on them now (07+).

is the variable geometry the same thing as a variable vain? were the turbo fins move so you always have boost instead of having to wait for the turbo to spool up.

Essentially yes. The vains close at lower RPMs controlled by the computer to put more exhaust gases through a smaller window (acting like a small turbo) increasing boost & spoolup time then opening up after everything is rolling. The downside is now you have exhaust restriction and increased EGTs.

Actually, I think quite the opposite is true. Bolting on parts before you know much about them usually results in disappointment.

My cousin's Duramax (I don't know the year) was overheating badly as he towed his fiver in Colorado last month. Wish I was there, I would have showed Government Motors how its done.

Soooo, he's buying a Class A motorhome and keeping the stupid truck. Yes, he apparently has more money than brains.

Must be a GM thing My buddy with the '05 fought with the dealer with overheating issues. GM denied there being a problem, he jumped through their hoopes proving it, THEN they admitted there was a problem. Their fix...cold air intake...lol...he already had one. He traded it off for a '07 Duramax, it runs pretty good i will give it that.

In order to find out what turbo is best for your truck, you might want to tell us what your goals are. Such as what power levels you want to make, what injectors you plan on running, what you plan on doing with your truck (towing, racing, sled pulling, etc)

There are many different turbo options out there. There is no "one size fits all".
