c6 governor exploded. Possible causes?

c6 governor exploded. Possible causes?
I have a 79 F150 4wd 400 c6 np205. The trans governor cracked and exploded and I was wondering what would cause that. I was also wondering If I could just replace the gov and transfercase adapter ( because the exploding gov put holes in it!) and be ok with a fluid flush? Any help would be very helpfull! I was driving down the highway. I noticed that it was smoking bad behind me so I pulled over and looked, it was leaking trans fluid bad but I was close to home so I decided to get there. Took off fine and upon reaching speedlimit (55) Blamo! loud horrible sound and what not. I shifted into neutral and coasted down a hill and got a couple hundred yards from my house, had to shift back to drive and it engaged fine and made it home, while leaving a trail that the town can follow to my house

I would assume something must have binded in the driveline, either the transfer case, u-joints or the rear axle locked up momentarily.
The Ford C6 and the governor are bomb proof, maybe you'll need nuke proof
