With EGR, you can run higher compression and more aggressive timing while burning less gas. It is beneficial to a gas engine. Now if it was a diesel, I'd have plenty of advice on removing it-

Is replacing it not an easier option than trying to eliminate it and most likely ending up with no improvement or even a worse running engine?

You could cut one out of a piece of sheet metal. The bottom of a sardine tin would work fine. Just use two gaskets.
