I need help locating my ICP sensor and determining if it is my problem. I just bought the truck and apparently it had been warmed up already when I looked at it so the truck would crank and run fine. Now, when I first crank the truck in the morning it will barely crank and it runs like crap for about fifteen minutes then it runs pretty good and it will crank up easily for the rest of the day. So,
I took the truck to a local diesel shop and they put it on a snap on tester. It should numerous things: One of the main issues that I saw was a problem with #1 and #2 cylinder. That showed up on two seperate test. I think is said something about pressure. The shop called the Ford dealership and they told them to replace the ICP sensor. The shop sent me to pick one up. I now have it and I cant seem to find it on the engine. I know this is a long winded question but I really would appreciate any and all input.
Well, after some research I found where the sensor was located and installed it. It did not change a thing. The check engine light is blinking on and off and it smokes lightly when its idling.
However, it does seem to run slightly and I might slightly better.
Unplug the ICP sensor while it is idling and see if it smooths out any.
How many miles are on your engine oil? What type of oil is it? Is it full? Your fuel injectors run off of engine oil, so making sure you have clean, full oil of the proper grade is critical.
Thanks for the reply. I had the oil changed as soon as the bought the truck with rotella t. It is full. After I changed the icp sensor I unplugged it to see if the engine would start and it did and idled fine.
The one thing I did notice once I put the new sensor on was that when the engine cranked it lopes three times before it smooths out and idles. I guess that makes since. It drops up and down in rpms three times then idles. I have no idea if that means anything.
If the truck idles better with the ICP unplugged, either the new sensor is bad, or you've got a short in the wires going to the sensor.
Unplugging the sensor will cause the CEL to come on and will throw a P1280 code, but it also causes the computer to run the truck based on default values instead of the readings from that sensor.
