I am a new X owner. Bought it about 1.5 months ago, and really like it. Its a 2000 limited, v-10 4x4 with 124,xxx miles. Since the purchase I have had to replace a few things: new front pass. side hub, new front sway bar end links and shocks and pulled all the power lock acuators and fixed the little resistor in each one.
The cruise control worked a couple times, but more often then not it didn't work. When you press the button to set the speed, the cruise light would momentarily blink, but not work. Every time I pressed set or resume the cruise light would flash, but not stay on. I was contemplating replacing the servo, but before spending the big bucks on one, I tested the pressure switch on the brake master cylinder. The recall pig-tail harness with fuse is in place already. I removed the connector from the pressure switch and put a jumper wire across the connector and went for a drive. My cruise works perfect. The part that confuses me is with the brake pressure switched bypassed, I can still turn cruise off by touching the brake pedal. I thought that the pressure switch was how the brake pedal cancelled cruise, But it must be also controlled by the interior brake switch as well.
So here's my question: Is there any danger to permantly by passing the pressure switch? The pressure switch itself is supposedly the culprit that caused all the vehicle fires in the Ford recall right? The recall harness has a 2amp fuse in the pig tail, which should blow if there are any electrical problems....I think.
Has anyone ever done this? If cruise can still be deactivated by pressing the brake pedal, and the pressure switch is not needed....then why have one?
You are correct that the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch disengages the cruise control. The Brake Pressure Switch (BPS) is for back up. If the BPP fails, the BPS will disengage the cruise control. If you don't fix the BPS, and your BPP fails, you can stomp on the brakes all you want and nothing will happen.
My Ex had the same issue. I replaced the brake pressure switch. It came with a new pigtail that attached to the original. When I disconnected the pigtail from the old switch I noticed it didn't feel attached or connected very well thus the cruise control not working very well. Once I replaced it it works great. It was only $21.00 and worth the shot.
This should be all you need to find your problems.
Will this apply to a 2003 X? On my X it just stopped working. The light on the dash lights up and I can hear a click when I set it but it will not hold the set speed.
