I am trying to program a spare transponder key for my remote start system in my expedition, I have followed the instructions that have been posted here for this year of truck. Every time I try to put the new key in after the original key my theft light flashes constantly. I've tried it many times and nothing. If anyone has any info on this it would be much appreiciated.
Are you sure you have the correct key? 99+ models use a different key. Otherwise, you basically insert old key, turn to run, turn off and within 5 seconds, insert new key and turn to run. Light goes out and you are done.
For the 99's you need the 2 ORIGINAL keys to program a new key. If you don't have them, you have to go to a dealership, or a locksmith with the Ford NGS machine.................
I also had to get another key for my 1997 Expeditions remote starter. If I recall correctly, you will need both original keys in order to program the third. If you do not have both then the dealer will have to do it for you.
If you do have both keys I'm sure the dealer will explain the procedure to you.
I don't know about the remote start and what mods needed for remote start to work, but on the '98 you do not need two keys to program a second pats key!
In order to program a second pats key you simply put the original key in the ignition switch and turn the key to the run position (do not start the motor), the theft light will come on then after a few seconds go off, now the computer is ready to program second key, turn the switch off and insert the new key and turn the switch back to the run position (again do not start) within 15 seconds. Now the new key is programmed. Turn the switch back to off remove the key and wait 20 seconds to start with the new key to check it.
I don't know if the '97 is different.

I picked up the second key at Ford Sat. and got into a debate with the parts guy over the entire programming issue.
He swore that the techs had to do it, and it only takes about 30 minutes.... I bet him a soda that I could program the new key in front of his eyes, and he accepted.
You should have seen his expression when I introduced the new key!
In with the original, wait 10 seconds, in with the copy, wait 10 seconds, start the truck.
I enjoyed my Mountain Dew.
To confirm:
97 - 98 need only one key to add a copy, 99 + need to have a pair.
However the Viper 150ESP auto starter requires at least two keys to properly enable the auto start function.
How to do that programming, I have no idea....
