I'm new to this forum, but not new to automotive forums. I'm usually at chevelles.com with my chevelle questions. However I had the misfortune of losing my Expedition ignition key either last night or early this morning. It was the chipped key and I only had one.
Am I screwed?
I have cleaned my house in hopes of finding it under the couch or fallen down the crack of something but it's still gone. I was wondering if the 1997 models only need one key to program a new key? Also was wondering if a new "master" key can be programmed based off the cut from my "unchipped" spare? Work comes as early as 7am tomorrow and I'd rather not stumble in embarrassed because I could not find the damn thing.
I like Fords and especially the Expeditions but I personally think Ford ruined it with the whole PATS thing. It makes it so inconvienant as an owner to be enslaved to the chipped keys.
Sorry to hear about your lost key, looks like you'll have to make a trip to the dealer. As far as I know you have to have 2 working keys to be able to progam any additional keys yourself. If you want to get rid of the PATS system, it can be bypassed with a module (some require you stick a PATS key under the dash)but you have to some some wiring.
Well I found it finally after 5 hours of searching. I thank you for the advice. I will look into getting the system bypassed and getting a second chipped key.
Well almost, it was in the back pocket of a pair of jeans I had on the day prior. I searched through all the dirty jeans except those. I couldn't recall wearing those during the weekend, which is why I didn't bother to check them. LOL.
