I need to have a key programmed for my 99 Expedition, but I only have 1 key now. How much does this cost and is the dealer the only one that can program the key?>
The dealer quoted me $25 for the key and $65 to program it. Most Locksmiths now have the ability to cut the key and program it. Shop around, and you could probably find a cheaper price for the programing.
Get a 3rd key cut, and you can program it yourself once you get the second one programmed.
You can prgram your keys yourself as long as you have one with the codes. You put the original in the ingnition and then you have like 3 seconds to put the new one in. And it will program it. My husband has done 3 of our keys. $20.00 each plus the programing!!!!! Was enough for him to YELL!!! E-mail me at pegasus6@swbell.net and I will have him tell you excatly how to it. (He is a mechanic ) saves a few dollars.

This option only works on the 97 model year............

The cutoff for one key programming is mid '98. I was able to program new keys for my '98 with only one original key. Not sure what the cutoff date is or what my manufacturing date is.
