I picked up a Ford Ranger for my daughter and bought a pats key from a seller on eBay... I had the key cut and I can't program the key to the truck...
I tried several times last night without success. I am going to try again today but I am wondering if it's a one time deal, or if there is a period of time to wait before I try again to program the key.
The key has an "S" stamped on it just like the two I have from the original owner, who says that they are the original keys that came with the truck when bought new.
Am I missing something? I am following the instruction in the owners manual to program the key.
By the way, its the same key (the stamped "S") that is used on my F-150.
Anyone have an idea to what I may be doing wrong???
Seller is being an a$$ and says he's not responsible for the programming, duh!!
My 07 only came with one key,and I bought two off ebay.Took them to the dealership, and had them cut the two new ones, and program them.Worked out great.Cost to cut and program the two additional was around 100 bucks.
Now...with THAT being said, supposedly if you have two ORIGINAL keys, you can have a third one cut,and the vehicle will program the third...It sounds like you have indeed followed the process. The only thing I can think,is that one of the "original" keys is not actually original.
I have doubts that the ebay key is actually at fault,as Ive purchased many in the past and never had one be "bad".Not to say its impossible......
If I have my guess, youll have to go back to the dealer, and have them program it.Take all the keys,as from what Ive heard, once they program one key,the other two wont be "coded" properly.Good luck
That's what I wanted to avoid: going and paying the dealer to program the key. I wonder what they would charge me to try and program it? And if they can't will they still charge me?
I would like to believe that the owner was telling me the truth about the 2 keys that I have are the original...
Just trying to save a buck ya know...
Thanks, I am glad to hear that I am doing the process correctly.
We just ran into the exact same problem with our Mountaineer and a buddy of mine made a few calls and a local car audio/alarm shop was able to reprogram the key using their computer. Total cost was around 60 bucks. They said the number of keys had been exceeded before we bought the car.
I took the two working keys and the new key down to a shop that has the computerized machine to program the keys... It still would not work.
I dread the thought of going to the dealer!!!
You would of been better off just going to an Ace Hardware and paying them the $70 bucks for a key that they program while you shop. Why people spend so much time on EBay for something like that and then a few more days trying to get it to work just seems foolish to me.
The Ace hardware key is just a copy of the program of the original, so the pats system looks at it like its an original. So it won't work when you go to reprogem another key using that as the second key. My understanding isd that there are 2 originals, both with different programming that the PCM reads and understands. Any other key has to be programed through the PATS system and that why a duplicate will not work as the system looks at it like the same key. So that is what I was told when we just went through this ordeal. Hope that it helps someone.

Strange thing is the people at the store told me they couldn't make a key for me either... Even though I have two working keys they said that they couldn't make me a key so I guess it's off to the dealer and drop a handful of cash.

This is starting to make sense to me... I bet I don't have both "original" keys...
The PATS system stores the chip id in its' memory. Max # of keys is 8. It sounds as if the system is full of key id's.
Here is some additional info for diagnosing PATS problems; https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/full...php?tsb=01-6-2
My dealer only charges $45 to program keys. I don't know what the big deal is trying to avoid the dealer. Either you have the max number of keys programmed(never seen that before), you have a bad key(have seen a few times), are not following the program procedure correctly(have to be fast when changing out keys or it wont take), or the program additional keys setting is turned off in the PATS module which will require a IDS scan tool to change.
