Hello, I am a proud owner of a 97 EB Expedition.
I am getting a squealing noise when I am turning from a stop or turning while backing up.I had some friends look at it and they said there were no fittings to lube up front.so i dowsed everything from one wheel to the other on the front with wd40 and that did not help either...and suggestions???
Check your Serpentine belt. It could be squealing. Or the power steering pump is squealing. Try turning with out turning the steering wheel until it stops. When ever you turn your wheels, if you turn the steering wheel until it stops, this causes unwanted pressure on the power steering unit. This will make it squeal.
My 97 rear sway bar bushings failed early on, and made a squeaky "rubber on metal" noise from the rear, but would occasionally sound like it was coming from the front, somehow. The rubber bushings pulled out of the fittings; if not obvious visually, lay under the rear and rock the corner of the bumber - it's pretty easy to find. It could be related to turning because of body roll...
My truck started doing the same thing when I had the wheel all the way to the right lock position and backing up. As I back up it sounded to me like a CV joint. 'Mindlessly', I fogot that these trucks do not have hubs at the wheels and that the shafts turn all the time. My noise has gotten worse, and yes it is an outer CV joint on the driver's side. No visual signs of damage, just makes noise at almost any steering position when in reverse, and sometimes when I come to an abrupt stop I seem to think I hear it. Good luck.
well I fixed the problem myself..I injected greese into the bushing (I guess its called)on the pitman arm and no more squeaky turns!! Thanks for the tips
Was this a noise that happened as you turned the wheel (pittman/idler arm squeaked as it moved through its arc), or did it happen after the wheel was turned as you backed up or went forward? My truck is very quiet as I turn the wheels while sitting still, my noise does not start until I move (usually in reverse) with the wheel all the way to the right lock.
The squeaking happened while turning not when done turning...I am so happy to be able to fix things like this myself and for the people on the message boards who share their know how.
I too have a 97 Expy -EB - Mine squeaks when I turn the wheel - we lubed up all that could be lubed which did nothing - I was told there is some part that would need to be replaced? Is that the 'Pitman Arm'(?) Anything that can be done without having to replace that??
I had the same squeak when I turned either direction. The noise is coming from the pitman arm where it is connected to the tie rod assembly. This is a non-greasable sealed joint, but it can be lubricated to stop the squeak. Go to a auto parts store and get a needle style grease adaptor. One end is a grease zerk and the other end is shaped like a large hypodermic needle. You can pierce the needle through the rubber boot at the end of the pitman arm, and grease the joint until the rubber boot starts to swell up. I did this two years ago on my pitman arm and haven't had a squeak since!
