If you have a 1964, you do not have a T-18, it wasn't available until 1965.
You have the Borg Warner T-98. It uses the same shift lever retaining cap as the T-18 (8MTH7220), which threads on/off.
Once you remove the cap, you will see the shift lever retaining pin (COTT7B125A-5/8" x 1/4" diameter). You cannot see it beforehand, as it's covered up by the cap.
Be very careful if using a pipe wrench to remove the cap, using this method may cause the cap to become oval. It may come off, but will be damaged beyond repair.
Hey thanks all for your help, it is 64 4x4 shortbed customcab.
I will try this evening to get it off , if all else fails angle grinder and new cap thanks
