I had the typical problems. I have an '89 Ranger and the ABS light would come on if I hit the brakes hard, then back off after startup until I hit it hard again. The brakes pulsed badly when traveling at highway speeds etc. I finally pulled off the RABS assembly and took it apart. I pulled out all the valves and the actuator/plunger. I cleaned everything. I found some small rust issues and a stuck valve. I did not find gook inside like some elude to though. I had everything working and sliding well, cleaned up the electrical connections at the actuator as well. I lubed it all with brake fluid and reassembled. I have only gone about 20 miles, but it works perfectly again. Cost?? NADA !!
SO, finding the rust causes me to want to ask how often you've been doing a power steering system fluid flush & what brand fluid have you been using????
Dang, I didn't mean power steering, I meant brake system fluid & system flush!!!
Gettin old is a bummer sometimes, I had to reread my post a number of times to realize what the heck you were talking about, as I was thinking brake system & fluid, but had typed p/s system!!!! lol
Anyway, how often had you flushed the brake system & with what recipe fluid would be interesting to know????
never ibought it used 3 summers ago . so I'm almost positive it was never flushed. surely a true complete flushing would be good. It is something to do to all vehicles. But understand, brake fluids ( not DOT 5 ) are hygroscopic, which means they attract moisture. This is why brake systems rust from the inside out so many times.
Roger on a regular brake system fluid flush. I do mine at least every three years, with the specified Motorcraft Dot-3 fluid, which is a really good high quality fluid & a great bang for the buck.
Yup we don't want to use silicone fluid in our brake system for sure.
To find out where you are on the curve, a nice, short easy to read brake fluid turorial & graph, here. Why Change Brake Fluid

Fixed it for ya !
On my race car I do it every other event. On my street Porsche I do it every 2 years (per the factory manual). On the rest of our vehicles I do it every 4 years or whenever I change pads & rotors, which ever comes first.
