Time delay brakes???

I've had my F350 crew cab 4x4 IDI for 3 years now, the brakes have always been terrible, peddle almost to the floor, i replaced the leaky hissing booster a while back which made little difference, the rabs valve thing on the chassis rail always has air in it when I bleed it, being hard to source parts in the UK I bypassed the rabs, now I have a pretty decent peddle, bit soft and sinks after a while but a lot better than it's ever been, the only problem is that when I appy the brakes nothing happens for 2 or 3 second then all of a sudden the brakes work, I cant lock the wheels but they pull up pretty quick after the 3 seconds delay, it's very strange to drive

If the pedal sinks while holding it down your master cylinder is bypassing internally. Replace the master cylinder.

Also, if the trunk has a vacuum booster, check the vacuum at the booster to make sure the pump is still working well. Someone here with more diesel experience can probability chime in on the values.

I'm more concerned with the delay in braking after pressing the brake peddle than the sinking, vac pump is fine

The master cylinder is bad. Replace it, then see if your problem persists. That's the first rule of troubleshooting. When you come to a part that is known to be bad you replace it then continue. You're wasting your time if you keep troubleshooting with known bad parts.

Check your adjustment on the rear brakes. They should have just the slightest amount of drag to them. Sometimes the auto adjusters don't automatically adjust.

If I were you, I'd start a complete brake system overhaul. I'd replace the master cylinder, all rubber soft-lines and both rear wheel cylinders since they're cheap enough. Also inspect the front calipers for leaks.

I'd probably start with the master cylinder, then move on to replace the soft lines.

Nothing's cheap in the UK, even if I get parts from the US the shipping is usually double the price of the parts then I get duty on top of that. So I can't afford replace everything as you suggest, even our diesel is over $10 a gallon

It'd be around $150 USD shipped to the UK for 3 rubber lines and a master cylinder assuming your truck is still LHD.

If you can't afford to replace the master cylinder and rubber lines you should just sell the truck.

You're the one who's driving a 20+ year old American diesel truck in a country where fuel costs $10/Gallon, and whining that you can't afford to spend £90,00 on some parts. If you can afford to put fuel in that pig, you can afford the parts.

Yeap, keep up with your cute British insults that literally mean nothing to me.

Your truck needs new brake components, and there is nothing you can do to make it right besides replace them. RockAuto ships internationally, and you can get all those parts shipped to your door for less than 90GBP. That's INCLUDING VAT AND CUSTOMS DUTY. So don't tell me what I do, and don't know.

RockAuto.com - Part Numbers: H38898, H38121, H38867, and 13065003.

I've done my research, I plugged all the numbers into rock auto, including a British shipping address, calculated the total shipping + item cost. I then took the time to look up the various UK import duties and VAT rates, and worked out the total cost to get those items to your door.

I then spent more time converting those costs to GBP, and providing you with the part numbers. I did all that despite you slinging a barrage of insults at me.

...and I'm the ********?

Wow.. I have seen some new member come in here and not like the advice they are given, but never one insult someone who is trying to help them the way you have. Remember this, you came here for OUR help. We don't have to help you, but we choose to. I'm with Lead Head, it sounds like you can't really afford the truck. Why have a 20 year old behemoth that you can't source parts for locally and can't afford the parts from America?

It looks to me like you came here hoping for a no cost fix that, with the age of that truck, does not exist. You have to pay to play my friend.

We're all adults here...why not act like it?

The forum's mods will sort this out. In the meantime, it's closed.
