Blowing fuses on external plugins.(powerport, cigar lighter) i.e. CB radio. I've spent hours trying to find the problem.Working without any info, I found no frayed wires. At the High Current Fuse Box, I found this;At port 106-Missing maxi fuse 20a; Half relay in port 206- missing; Port 208- missing half relay; port 203- missing half relay; port 302- missing Full relay. My 2000 F150 truck runs good, and I used my powerport before with no problems. I cant figure out what happened. Do these missing relays have anything to do with my problem, or is there something else I'am not finding? Currently working on cleaning Groundwires around truck. Any of you members have any advice that can help me tackel this problem? this Texas Boy would surely thank Ya'll.
When I bought this truck,It had one previous owner. the only damage I saw were whisky dents and schratches.I will say this..I've had major problems with Vandels. despite Locking my truck day and night, I supect someone may have gotton acsess to it. Besides that. what do you think might be the problem Ultramagdan?
Your discription is a little vague as to what/which ports and what equipment you are trying to power off these ports.
First, the cigar lighter port is not reccomended for any other use because it's internal center + connector is different. Take a look at the differences.
Second, the 'port' fusing is limited to 10 amps. What is your draw etc.?
Are your plug tips and wiring good and not reversed?
Is there something stuck in a port?
If fuses blow only when you plug something in, then either to much current is being drawn or the equipment is defective.
10 amps times 14 volts is 140 watts as max power to draw.
Even then, if max current is drawn, the fuse will have limited life which is normnal because any fuse passing current at or near it's spec limit will fail in time from excessive heating.
Good luck.
Ok, I'll try to be more exact.Port 302-Trailer tow battery charge relay; Pt.203-Trailer tow backup lamp relay; Pt.206-Fog lamp relay; Pt.208-Inter Cooler pump relay (Lighting only); Pt.106-Inter Cooler pump(Lighting only). I dont know that these relays and, one Maxi fuse have anything to do with my Powerpoint Trouble, and I understand that not all ports are used , but it looks like these had fuses at one time. True, the cigar lighter is not reccomended. I've checked to make sure that the powerport is pluged in tightly. A visual check of port looks clear. My cobra cb run's off of 12v. I dont understand how for weeks all worked well, and one day I blow 3 fuses as soon as I plug in my CB? And yes I replaced fuses with the corect rating.I'm open to any suggestions. Thank Y'all For any info.
Well , does the CB have a problem?
Many CB designs have a protection diode accross the 12 volt line so that a fuse will blow protecting the CB from damage if connected in reverse.
If this diode is shorted it will blow the main fuse everytime as a normal result of the direct short across the power supply line..
As a Ham, I run a 2 meter FM radio that can run as high as 65 watts output but cannot run that power level out of a power port due to the limitation of the circuit so have to run a max or 45 until I get around to installing a dedicated feed from the battery to handle the higher power.
