and if theres anything else yall think i should throw in or anything let me know.
the truck is a 1977 150 4wd and will be dd, show, fun and some off road.
thanks guys!
You will find yourself limited to stock low compression pistons for the 351m. Find a 400 or a 400 crank and rebuild it that way. You are putting performance parts on a pig. You will still end up with a pig. Or, to put it another way, you will not get the performance you are going to be paying for, and you will be putting the same amount of gas in it in the end anyway.
There are several 400 build threads here, check them out.
Serving suggestion, but with a 351m, your mileage won't vary.....
Ok I'm kinda thinking 460 but then I'll have to upgrade axels too won't I? Or just front springs?
If I go 400 I'm not looking for crazy power just something fun I enjoy the truck now but want to rebuild what's there in put a rebuilt something in there.
Rebuild the 351m into a 400. All your money goes into the motor, not changing all the stuff that's different with the 460. Don't get me wrong, a 460 is a great way to go--a buddy did one in his Bronco. BUT it is heavier and you will spend lots on the conversion. AND, what are you going to do, put some worn out pillow barge 460 in there? Hell no! You're going to rebuild that too. I see scads of dollars leaving your wallet.
Rebuid the 351m into a 400. 9.3 compression, RV or mild performance cam, dual plane intake, 600 CFM 4bbl, and never look back.
I think sense the 351m is still running and have no need to rebuild it right away sense I have another truck I'm going to get a 460 and do the swap and go for 400-500 hp and enjoy it just want to build the engine over this summer maybe winter too and start restoring the truck also.
Have a look at Tim Meyers site before you go to far. Not only does he do a fully balanced rotating 400 assembly for not bad coin, he also does a 434 stroker kit. He also does a several higher comp pistons if you just wanted to go that way. Well worth the look IMHO

if building a 400 and put a set of trick flow heads on it and a nice cam. I don't see a problem. this is only about 1 hrspwr per cube to make 400 hrspwr of more. I like and own and run a big block but if wanting something not to crazy and just a good running truck the 400 will do the job. I have a album of a 400 build with a 400 with cobrajet heads kinda extreme 4wd situation. could of went a little different on the application but had the time and money and now its done. the trick flow heads are nice and the chi heads are a little better. google chi heads cleveland and get educated on one of the best heads on the market for the 400. if any questions drop a message and will help with options. like it when old iron runs well!!!
