Does anyone know anything about the OD trannies Ford used in the 80s fullsize cars. I have an 85 Grand Marquis with OD, but it has a traditional kickdown rod instead of a TV cable. I have been told this tranny is more durable than an AOD. A friend said it was a C6 with OD, but I've never heard of that. Does anyone know what this is or if it will hold up while towing? It seemed to perform fine in the car until the engine died. I am asking because I have had a couple of AODs & have been less than satisfied with their durability.
The C6 is a 3spd and no OD. The tranny you have is most likely an AOD. The were offered with both a TV cable(1988?to 1993) and TV rod(1980 to 1987?). I am not exactly sure on the change over year.
AODs have the TV cable/rod mounted on a movable collar that goes around the shaft for the shifter (right?). This tranny has two separate shafts. Also, the pan looks different & doesn't have the "Automatic Overdrive Metric" stamping. Would this still be an AOD? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just want to give as much info as possible. Thanks for the reply.
The AOD has a gear shifter, from column to tranny. Tv rod or cable from throttle to tranny. Both connect to the tranny at the same spot but on different levers.
The best way to tell what you have is to crawl under and check the pan.
