what kind of tranny ?

i parted a 88 f150 for the 5.0 motor and overdrive trans for a swap to a 64 . the motor and tranny is pretty fresh but the wiring harness is a total mess . (some genious used all the same color wiring when they did a repair and then wrapped it in black tape . used cheap connectors and they pulled loose as we unwound the tape !)
so we have decided to ditch the fuel injection for right now and go with a carb and a msd box for the sake of getting it on the road .
the tranny that we pulled out of the f150 has 2 differnt wire plugs and ive been told this is a aode tranny.(which will be a real pain to get it to shift without the wiring harness ) i have looked on the net and not found a pic to confirm this .(i got dialup and its slowww) the first plug is in the tailshaft on the speedometer cable and the second is over the pan in the main case . i was hoping for a aod tranny but dont even know what it looks like .
also does anyone have a quick (and cheap ) solution for the use of a aode without a wiring harness ? what kind of vehical can i find a aod in ? thanks rg

C6 = 17 pan bolt holes / AOD = 14 pan bolt holes.

AOD introduced in 1980 and used thru the 1990's on many cars like LTD's & Crown Vics, Mercury Grand Marquis, T-Birds, Cougars, Lincoln Town Cars, Continental Sedans (1982/88), Lincoln Mark VI & VII.

1981 and later F150's, Bronco's, Econolines, and etc.

T = Warranty Plate or Certification Label code for the AOD used on F Series trucks, Broncos & Econolines.

can some one tell me what the two electrical plugs are for ? i saw on the net that one of the plugs is for the neutral safety switch and reverse lights . i assume that would be the one in the case above the pan . does anyone know what the other electrical plug (one on speedo cable )is for ?
oh great # dummy i am not sure that this trans came stock in this year of truck .(with the wiring butchered i really wonder )the truck had a motor and trans change just before i bought it . i did drive the truck home and it shifted alittle funny but did go into od .
how can i tell a aod from a aode ? i will confirm that the pan has 14 bolts . is there a casting # on the outside and where would it be ? is the pan for a aode and a aod the same ? thanks rg

you need a electronic controler if it a E4od its a electronicly controled trany.
An AOD is a straight "mechanical" tranny Ive only seen one and all it had was a speedo gear hole.
Im not saying there is no wires on an aod it has to have a few but as to what they do get a oem wiring chart.

does the aode have the same pan as the aod ? my friend told me that if the vehical doesnt have a button to shut the od off (on the end of the gear select ) then it must be a aod . IM SO CONFUSED !!!!!!!!! . i looked at another tranny that the guy said is a aod and it was the same tranny i have but no wires on the speedo . thanks rg

Look on the left side of the transmission case for a riveted on metal tag with the Ford transmission code...post it here.

The code will have a three letter prefix beginning with the letter P followed by a suffix.

Once you post the code, and it's decoded...that'll tell exactly what the trans is, and what vehicle it came from.

AOD = 14 pan bolt holes.

E4OD = 20 pan bolt holes.

There's no such thing as an AODE.

There's not one mention of an AODE in any Ford parts catalog.

In fact, I never even heard of a AODE till I read a few posts about it in the last couple of days.

Everything for the AOD transmission, whether it's for a 1980, or a 1995 is listed under AOD, there's nothing else.

AODE is the aftermarkets name for this trans, not Ford's.

here is the tag # PBK J12
096756 F9
E7 TP BAB
the tag is not riveted it is bolted to the tailshaft .
casting #'s TAILSHAFT RF-E0AP-7A040-BD
CASE E9 DP-7006-AA
i read somewhere that the name aode was given to the earily 4r70w (from 91 to 94 ) i dont really know .
last time i built a ford i only had to worry about the differnce between a c-3 , c-4 , c-5 (looking alike but aint). now i have several .
thanks for your info and time . the casting # for the tailshaft is the one mentioned above for the aode small bearing . (e0ap) the local junk man told me if the trans has a tv cable then it shouldnt be controlled by a computer . in other words he says the aod has a tv cable and the aode or 4r70w will not .i dont believe he really knows and wonder if he is just trying to sell a trans . IM SO CONFUSED

88 is still a TV cable AOD...around 91 they switched to electronic with the new systems. At least thats what my shop schematic's tell me for wiring diagrams.
