OK now i need some real-time HELP!
Towing on vacation today (85 degrees) 10,000 trailer, at 40mph -30 minutes at 5-7% grade - tempt when up (2 needle widths from yellow) and stayed their.
Pulled over at rest stop and tranny fluid all over the bottom of truck!!!
Down to middle of HOT on dipstick.
Have camped for the night.....plan is to get moving early in AM and beat the heat.
Is this commen to over heat; local service station said they get 150 people every summer who overheat their tranny-----but I thought these trucks could take it
Did I push it to hard?
It still drove fine - just puked out (dipstick and ????- hard to tell)
Is it OK to drive in cooler weather??
The worst hills and heat are behind me.
Anyone experience thsi??
THANKS MUCH!
The guy commented back to me. I asked if he knew what caused it, and he said "no not really, my tranny started getting hot right before i saw smoke, by the time i got pulled over and popped the hood we saw small flames but we couldnt get it put out"
It is very dangerous to puke an oil (combustible) under the hood!
Not only #2 but has the fluid ever been flushed as per manual. Op doesn't give the miles on the truck but I have done worse grades than that with the 5er in sig. on 100+ degree days and had no tranny issues. "Knock on wood"

Good question - the truck just got back from having the heads down....never checked the tranny fluid before the trip.....just assumed it would be at the proper level.
Just got home and all went well!
20 degrees cooler for most of the trip sure helped.
Fluids and filters were changed by me 5k ago.
Wil go back to shop next week and see what they say.
So back to my main question: is it 'normal' for the tranny temp to climb so high under my circumstances- hot day; continuous 30 minute steep climb; pulling 10k load?
Anyone else seen this?
Thanks for all the feedback- didn't like to see the burning truck will put extinguisher in truck now!!!
In pan and in line toilet paper....and all the fluid in the pan (about 12 quarts).
Was kind of dirty so perhaps another drink of clean fluid could help.
Do the oiler coolers ever need an internal cleaning???
Can a shop test the efficiency of the tranny cooler system???
Front fins are 95% clear- just smushed bugs.
Fan could have come on more but it did come on and off several times.
What about an electric fan that just stays on whenever I'm pulling in heat???
Anyone using one?
