I've got a 1984 F-150 4.9L 300. Installed a new starter, was told since I did that, put in a new starter solenoid also. Have had problems since then. First one I must have put the positive and negative backwards drained the battery. Second one I bought must have been a bad one, it just clunked when I tried to start it. Now my third one I have power to the lights, radio, etc. But the engine won't turn over. I was told to try the jumping method to see if it will start. I could really use some advice. Thanks everyone. Dani
so you have a brand new starter, solenoid, and battery? are your terminals tight, aswell as all your other wiring for the starter. i had a extreme starting issues on both my trucks this last year, 1st was caused by bad terminals(replaced starter and solenoid, before i figured that out) 2nd was something in the wiring(i undid all wires for starter cleaned them up then reinstalled)
My starter died (would thrust forward but wouldn't spin), had to pop the clutch to get it home. Napa suggested a starter and starter solenoid. First starter was bad. Benched tested it with a batter and jumper cables. Spun but wouldn't thrust forward.
Second starter's been good since I installed it, better stay that way.
Just be very sure that everything on the solenoid is the way it was before all of this. Also yea, bench testing your starters with a battery and cables works fine, watch out for sparks.
If the truck is manual pop the clutch to see if it will start. Take the starter off and yea bench test it.
