so i am trying to replace the starter in my 62 f100 pickup. the starter solenoid that was in there was working
but i had one that fit and decided to put it in. I've connected the wires to the new solenoid the same way the old
one was connected. it still won't even try, and when i tried to connect the old one back in, it doesn't work either now. what sould i do?

The Bendix drive used on these trucks has a large coil spring incorporated with it.
If the spring breaks, the starter motor will just spin, because the drive cannot mesh with the teeth on the flywheel.
Is the starter spinning and just not catching the flywheel or is it not doing anything?
is it engaging and not turning the motor over? if it is engaging you might have a bad
winding?...
Are you sure your flywheel is in good condition? If you have teeth missing you could just have your engine in a bad spot in the flywheel, and therefore it won't work.
no its not doing anything, it has juice from the battery but when i turn the ignition key, the lights work and the radio works, but it doesn't spin or engage the engine, and when i tried to put the working old one back in and it doesn't do anything now, even though its wired exactly the same it was when it was working...
Bypass the solenoid, and see if that cranks. Just take a large pair of channel locks or a large gauge wire, and connect the battery directly to the cable going to the starter. If that does it then you have a bad solenoid.
You might have puchased a bad ''Starter''? even tho it's new doesn't mean it's good?
if you have 12 volts going to it, it should at least spin even if the bendix don't push it in
to the flywheel!..last resort take it off and take it back to where you got it and let them
bench test it!...
