I have a 2004 F350 Diesel and recently I've sporadic steering problems. Occasionally when coming out of a sharp turn, my steering seems to stick a bit. After coming out of the turn and centering my wheel it seems to be riding on a point where if you don't hold it just so, it will pop over and you will need to pull it back. If I slow down and serpentine my wheel back and forth, the problem disappears and may not reappear for days. I jacked my front end up and checked my ball joints and they seemed to have zero play in them. I fear taking it to the Ford dealership and having them experiment on my pocket book like they wanted to do last time. I'm a pretty handy guy and could probably fix it myself but the troubleshooting part of this is getting to me. Any help would be appreciated.
Is your truck single or duel rear wheels? 2w or 4w drive? What size tires and wheels? Any lift? Is tire pressure OK? You didn't mention if you have had alignment checked and had tires inspected very carefully (rotating tires may help if SRW). (If you have Generals or Conti's I would suppect tire problems-tread seperation, etc.) One last thought, you may need to change power steering fluid (possible valve sticking?). Keep us posted as to what the problem was. Good luck
If it is 4wd, check your U-jounts at the ends of the front axle. I had the exact same thing happen with mine. The U-joints were the culprit. One of the caps bound up. What you are feeling is the front axle drifting and repositioning the orientation of the bad cap.
