Power Steering problems

I have a 77 F250 4x4 that I had to replace the pressure and return power steering hoses on due to leaks. I used correct replacement hoses from a box auto parts store and they seem to fit fine. The trouble is that now my steering has a mind of its own. With the motor running, the wheel will turn on its own, and I cannot seem to stop it. The wheels have turned from lock to lock on their own, and sometimes will just wiggle back and forth seemingly in time with the motor. What has happened? I cant seem to bleed the system because I cant turn the wheel. The pump made noise, but isnt locked up and doesnt always make noise. I am open to any suggestions. Right now the wheels arent moving and I cant move them.

I've replaced dozens of steering gears, pumps and hoses as front end technician and I've never seen anything like that. If it wasn't behaving this way before, perhaps you have an obstruction in the return line? I would disconnect it from the steering box, and with the engine off, see if you can steer the wheels. See if fluid comes out of that port in the box, steering back and forth with the wheels off the ground and engine off. Keep us posted. I know the pump will make noise if the flow is blocked, since this pushes the pressure from the normal 150 PSI or so up toward 1500 PSI. Thats the noise that can be heard when the wheel is held turned to the steering stop.

I will give it a try, it seems reasonable that I would have some crud in the return line, I had a heck of a time lining them up, and the front drivers side is covered with crud at the moment. Thanks

Ouch! I thought about my arm when the steering wheel was rotating back and forth violently....

I could very well have the lines crossed, I just unhooked the lines and there is fluid coming from both ports on the box. Also fluid seems to flow from the hoses just fine. As you are looking at box, does the return line hook up to the front or the back of the box?

If you have integral power steering (2 hoses total), both hoses attach to the gearbox next to each other. The pressure line attaches to the gearbox port on the engine (inner) side of the gearbox, the return line attaches to the port on the curb (outer) side of the gearbox.
