Hey guys, yesterday my transmission started shifting really weird into 3rd gear. Its a really rough shift and it feels like it either shifts back and forth from 2nd to 3rd or the torque convertor is locking and unlocking, or both. It starts up from a stop in 1st and 2nd fine, it just seems to be in 3rd...and this is around town driving at about 55kmh to 60kmh. Any ideas what this would be? Am i losing my tranny? Or is it something simple that i can fix cheaply? I smelled the oil and it doesnt smell burnt. Anything else i could check? Any help would be much appreciated thanks guys...dave
I know you said it just started doing it and you have had the truck for a while so you would know, but how about turning OD off and see how it does at those speeds. It could be the TC locking and unlocking or if the problem persists, maybe pull the chip and try it to see if it is still there. Does it do it in all tunes?
Just an idea for now while we wait for someone smarter than me.
Mine had been doing something similar. Felt like it would shift into third ok but then the TC would lock/unlock/lock kinda quick, jerked back and forth for a second. (not every time, but quite often)
It had been doing that for a few months before I eventually lost third gear.
The trans is out being rebuilt right now (twice in one week, but thats another story) and I have a new TC...
So before you throw your laptop, it may just be the TC...Im not sure, But have it looked at before your in my shoes.
Ya i tried it with od off...it does the adsact same thing. I was thinking that maybe it was the torque converter too...but it doesnt do anything weird in 1st and 2nd. I dont know...any other suggestions? And ya, i dont plan on driving it too much until i get this one solved.
i remember reading about a diode or solonoid or something that was bad on these trucks...could that be my problem? Also, where can i get a good used 6.0L convertor and do that conversion? I'm hoping to not have to spend too much money...hoping. I'm a little poor right now.

There was a mechanical diode that caused a lot of problems. It went into production at the start of the 2001 model year. No 2000 model year truck had one.
So im going to order a new converter and a transgo shift kit. Will put a new filter in too. Are there any other things i should do while the transmission is out?
