I am workin on an 87 ford 302 and putting a 5 speed tranny in it...before it was only a 4 speed... but i can get it in till it reaches the pegs and wont go farther than that.. i was thinking the piolet bearring was differnt between the to...
yea i used an alignment tool and i measured the splines and it fits into the clutch, it just wont go any farther i cant twist the tranny up and 1in so the bolts line up
try measuring the length of the input shafts on both trannies. if they are the same you are probably just not quite getting everything aligned on the installation. just takes patience and tenacity sometimes.
Putting a trans back in can drive ya nuts.
One thing I started doing years ago was making guide pins to hold the trans up and align it at the same time. I just used bolts that were the same size & pitch as the bellhousing bolts, only longer and with the heads cut off. Haven't had to fight a tranny since.
Snag a set of dial calipers and check the ID of your pilot bearing against the OD of the input shaft. If they don't jive, you're wasting your time. And if you check the length of the shaft, use a straightedge on the bellhousing face as a reference point.
Is the trans hitting/interfering anything else, like the tunnel or a crossmember? You might have to loosen up the engine mounts to get a better angle.
